Lund Stem Cell Center invites you to join this special guest talk with Jerome Mertens, Associate Professor at the Department of Neurosciences of the University of California, San Diego on Thursday, 23 April at 15:00. This event takes place in conjunction with the PhD defense of Chandramouli Muralidharan, supervised by Associate Professor Karolina Pircs.

About the Speaker:

Jerome Mertens completed his PhD in the lab of Oliver Brüstle at the University of Bonn in Germany and Philipp Koch, and his postdoc in Rusty Gage’s lab at the Salk Institute. Afterwards, he held the position as Assistant Professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. His work has been supported by grants and fellowships, including a K99/R00, a Marie Curie Fellowship, and an ERC Starting Grant.

Currently, Jerome is an Associate Professor at the Department of Neurosciences of UCSD, and Adjunct at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, US where his research focus is to better understand the interface between the biology of aging and neurodegeneration. 

In his laboratory on Neural Aging, he and his team reprogram human skin cells into brain cells to better understand age-related diseases. They apply both directly induced neurons (iNs) and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technologies to develop and learn from the next generation of human disease models.

About Chandramouli Muralidharan's PhD Defense

On 24 April, 2026 at 13:00 Lund University doctoral student, Chandramouli Muralidharan, will defend his dissertation titled 'Multi-omic investigation of cell-type-specific molecular changes in physiological and pathophysiological aging of the human brain.'
