Sustainable AI in Practice: From Computational Costs to Real-World Impacts

From medical imaging to drug discovery, AI is reshaping biomedical research. But it also requires significant energy and resources. Join this panel during Sustainability Week to explore AI’s footprint, its potential, and what responsible practice could look like in Sweden.

During Sustainability Week in Lund, the Sustainability Committee at Lund Stem Cell Center invites you to a public panel discussion on artificial intelligence and sustainability.

AI systems are increasingly used in research, healthcare, industry and everyday life. But AI also requires large amounts of computation, data storage and hardware - all of which have environmental and energy costs. At the same time, AI has the potential to support more efficient systems, better resource use and improved decision-making.

This event explores both sides.

We will discuss:

  • What drives AI’s environmental footprint (compute, storage, hardware)
  • Where AI can genuinely support sustainability and when it risks undermining it
  • What responsible and resource-aware AI use looks like in practice

The programme includes short talks followed by a moderated panel discussion and audience Q&A. The goal is to move from general principles to actionable takeaways: what choices can researchers, students, organisations and decision-makers make to reduce impact while still benefiting from AI?

  • Sophia N. Wilson, University of Copenhagen – resource-efficient machine learning and sustainable AI
  • Anton Moberg, Heterogenous Compute Architect at Inceptron AB – efficient AI computing and acceleration
  • Jonas Lindemann, Director of LUNARC – high-performance computing, energy use and measurement

The event is open to students, researchers, professionals and members of the public interested in technology, sustainability and responsible innovation.

About the Organizers

The event is organised by Lund Stem Cell Center & Strategic Research Area StemTherapy, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University. Founded in 2003, Lund Stem Cell Center is a leading academic research organization advancing the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine at Lund University. Our scientific community includes 44 research groups with over 300 members, which established its own Sustainability Committee in 2022.  

The event is part of Sustainability Week 2026, which runs between 13-18 April. Sustainability Week is an annual event in Lund organised as a joint venture by Lund University and Lund municipality. The week serves as a platform for bringing together ideas, raising public awareness and for inspiring sustainable change.
